POSITION SUMMARY
The Mechanic 3 position represents the journeyman level within the maintenance progression program. This classification is responsible for leading complex troubleshooting, precision repairs, and reliability-based maintenance of mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems across the facility. Mechanic 3 employees are proficient in the use and interpretation of predictive maintenance technologies (vibration, infrared thermography, ultrasonic) and contribute to reliability improvement projects, mentoring, and planning/scheduling support.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead or perform advanced troubleshooting, repair, and overhaul of mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
- Independently diagnose failures using root cause analysis (RCA) methods and develop corrective repair plans.
- Apply and interpret predictive maintenance tools (vibration, infrared, ultrasonic) to identify early signs of failure and improve asset reliability.
- Specify, order, and install mechanical components, bearings, seals, and drive elements with minimal supervision.
- Work directly with planning/scheduling personnel to define job scopes, part lists, and estimated repair durations.
- Support asset management efforts by entering detailed failure codes, cause, and resolution information in the CMMS.
- Serve as mentor to junior mechanics, providing instruction in safety, troubleshooting, and reliability best practices.
- Collaborate with production to schedule and coordinate downtime for maintenance work.
- Perform alignment, balancing, and precision assembly tasks using measurement tools and fixtures.
- Ensure strict compliance with PPE, LOTO, and PIT operation requirements.
- Participate in confined space entries, fall protection, and hot work activities as authorized and trained.
- Support and contribute to 5S, continuous improvement, and plant reliability meetings.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
- Expert-level knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
- Competency in vibration, infrared, and ultrasonic predictive maintenance techniques.
- Ability to perform failure analysis and recommend permanent corrective actions.
- Strong understanding of alignment, tolerancing, and precision assembly methods.
- Skilled in use of machine shop and fabrication equipment for in-house repairs.
- High proficiency in CMMS work order creation, completion, and feedback accuracy.
- Knowledge of planning/scheduling workflows and asset management concepts.
- Proven mentoring, communication, and leadership abilities.
- In-depth understanding of plant safety programs, PPE, LOTO, and regulatory compliance.
QUALIFICATIONS
- High School Diploma or GED required; technical degree or journeyman-level certification preferred.
- Minimum of 3–5 years industrial maintenance experience or completion of Mechanic 2 requirements.
- Demonstrated proficiency with predictive maintenance tools and techniques.
- Current certifications in PIT operation, LOTO, confined space, and other required safety programs.
- Strong record of attendance, safety performance, and teamwork.
ADVANCEMENT CRITERIA
- Demonstrated mastery of predictive maintenance tools and reliability principles.
- Proven ability to lead complex maintenance jobs and mentor lower-level mechanics.
- Documented participation in planning/scheduling and asset management initiatives.
- Completion of Level 3 training modules and on-the-job evaluations.
- Consistently accurate and complete CMMS documentation.
- Eligibility for Master Mechanic classification upon supervisor and HR validation of skill check-off and training completion.
NOTES
- This classification is governed by the USW Local #2936 bargaining agreement.
- Advancement is determined through verified competency, demonstrated leadership, and completion of the Mechanic 3 training program.
- Continued compliance with PPE, PIT, and safety certifications is mandatory.
