Facilities Department Department: Facilities Management – Power Plant Title: Watch Engineer (P000345) Date: August 5th, 2024 Reports to Chief Engineer Days Worked Sunday,Monday,Tuesday,Wednesday,Saturday, Hours Worked 3:00pm to 11:00pm Days off Thursday & Friday Pay rate $44.36 per hour (Plus 4% differential) PRIMARY FUNCTION(S): The Watch Engineer maintains and operates all mechanical equipment in the boiler plant, chill plant and the cogeneration peaker plant. They are responsible for the safe, efficient, clean and reliable operation for all power plant equipment. This position must ensure compliance with state and federal regulations regarding the operation of the power plant. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following, other duties may be assigned: ● Must have knowledge and experience of the operation of the chill water plant equipment, primarily electrical centrifugal chillers, cooling towers and associated equipment. ● Must have knowledge of the operation of all boiler room equipment, such as: high pressure steam boilers, pumps, heat exchangers, air compressors, water treatment systems, fans, motors and associated equipment. ● Familiar with the operation of a gas fired cogeneration peaker plant, such as starting, stopping and synchronizing. A general knowledge of the production of AC electricity, such as: voltage, amperage, excitation and power factor. ● Must conduct hourly and daily written readings if power plant equipment observing temperatures, pressures and flows to ensure proper operating conditions. Must be able to test and record water treatment for boilers feed water, condensate return, closed hot water and glycol loops and cooling tower water per the plant’s guidelines. ● Must be able to operate all equipment in an efficient manner to ensure optimum operating conditions under varying circumstances. ● Ability to establish and maintain positive and cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work at all levels, with a focus on quality service to students, internal staff and external customers. ● The employee must be able to work with chemicals, oils and greases in the operation and maintenance of the power plant. ● The watch engineer needs to be able to and feel comfortable working in areas considered confined spaces. ● Since the power plant is a 24x7x365 operation, all personnel within the power plant may be required to work unusual hours, weekends and holidays to cover the various watches and perform maintenance as directed by the Chief Engineer or designee. Facilities Department MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: ● The watch engineer must have, and keep current, a Third Class Engineers license issued by the State of Massachusetts. ● Must have a High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and (3) three years of experience in a power plant setting. ● A valid driver’s license is a condition of initial and continued employment. Operate assigned equipment and vehicle. ● Experience in the generation of electricity is preferred. ● Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules and electrical diagrams, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. ● Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak English. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Communicate clearly and concisely and be able to relay instructions and directions to others. ● The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 70 pounds and possibly 100 pounds.
