Inspector of Plumbing and Gas

The Town of Needham is seeking a highly motivated individual to fill the full-time position of Inspector of Plumbing and Gas. This position performs varied and detailed inspectional duties, ensuring compliance with Massachusetts State Plumbing and Fuel Gas codes, regulations, and pertinent Town bylaws.

Schedule: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.; Tuesday 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.; Friday 8:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Duties and Responsibilities

These duties are a general summary and not all inclusive:

  • Administer and enforce the provisions of the Plumbing and Gasfitter Codes (CMR 248) as adopted or amended by the Board of State Examiners of Plumbers and Gasfitters through:
    1. Inspecting installations for all plumbing and gas fitting work for which permits have been issued
    2. Reviewing construction, installation, and repair work relative to plumbing and gas trades to ensure compliance
    3. Identifying non-compliant practices and recommending alternative practices that comply with code when necessary
    4. Issuing citations where required
  • Assist plumbers and Gasfitters in the field with piping designs and layouts, pipe size, etc; guide plumbers or Gasfitters in interpreting the code and the intent of the law; consult and advise other Town officials as needed or requested.

 

Requirements

To be considered for the position, applicants must have at least:

  • Massachusetts Master or Journeyman Plumber's and Gas Fitter's license
  • Valid Driver’s License

The following additional requirements may be substituted by any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job:

  • Extensive technical or specialized training such as that which would be acquired by an Associates Degree or two years of technical or business school
  • Between four to six years’ experience

In addition to the requirements of work, strong candidates will also have the following knowledge, ability, and skills:

  • Thorough knowledge of plumbing and gas practices, laws, regulations, and pertinent codes equivalent to a journeyman in plumbing/gas fitting.
  • Skill in interpersonal communication and conflict resolution.
  • Skill in communication with internal and external stakeholders, including contractors and residents.
  • Basic computer skills including the use of email and Microsoft Suite.
