Boiler Plant Lead Operator

Job Profile Summary 

​This role focuses on activities related to the support services functions, such as dietary and food services, environmental services, general facilities, repair and maintenance, parking, sterilization and transportation to ensure all required support activities are completed in a timely manner and meet the organization's quality standards and expectations.  In addition, this role focuses on performing the following General Facilities, Repair & Maintenance duties: Operates, monitors and maintains, troubleshoots, repairs and replaces facilities mechanical components and systems such as electrical equipment, HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) and plumbing.   A technical role that accomplishes work through a specialized knowledge or skills gained through a combination of vocational education, training, apprenticeship (craft, skilled and semi-skilled), and experience.  A senior level role that requires broad knowledge of operational procedures and tools obtained through extensive work experience and requires vocational or technical education.  Works under limited supervision for routine situations, problems typically are not routine and require analysis to understand, provides assistance and/or may lead and train lower level employees and may lead daily operation activities. 

 

Job Overview 

This position carries out physical plant operations, preventative maintenance, on call services, on seven day a week shift cycle, to ensure that patient comfort and safety are maintained. 

 

Job Description 

Minimum Qualifications: 

1. High school diploma or equivalent. 

2. Third class engineer license or higher. 

3. Four (4) years of technical experience with electromechanical equipment and systems. 

4. Three (3) years of experience in the operations maintenance and repair of equipment and systems similar to those used in facilities. 

5. Previous supervisory experience. 

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

1. Four (4) years of technical experience with electromechanical equipment and systems in a healthcare facility. 

2. Five (5) years of experience in the operations maintenance and repair of equipment and systems similar to those used in facilities. 

 

Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities listed below are intended to describe the general nature of work and are not intended to be an all-inclusive list.  Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned. 

 

1.  Reads, records, and inspects heating, plumbing, refrigeration, HVAC systems including high pressure steam boilers, chillers, compressors, pumps, motors, electric and pneumatic controls, water storage tanks, dumps, drains, etc. on a regular basis. 

2. Performs preventative maintenance as assigned on the following systems and equipment, such as high pressure steam boilers, air conditioning systems, large and small, tonnage package units, ice machines, compressors, pumps, motors, fans, air units, emergency lights, generators, etc. 

3. Responds to all emergency calls such as loss of power, steam, water, heat, ice and snow, etc. by operating all appropriate emergency equipment in case equipment changes are required such as emergency generators, electric power transfer switches, high pressure steam boilers, water systems, etc. 

4. Diagnoses and rectifies problems within physical plant such as loss of heat, loss of hot water, power outage, loud noises, hot bearing, units overheating, broken belts, jammed controls, etc. 

5. Notifies appropriate authorized personnel of impending problems, or major equipment or system failures which need specialized repair.  

6. Starts, stops and operates all equipment according to established procedures and criteria. 

7. Supervises and directs the work of one or more assigned Boiler Plant Operator; performs training as required. 

8. Performs preventive maintenance tasks and repairs as assigned. 

9. Enters operating data in appropriate logs and logbooks. Prepares deficiency lists and reports as needed. 

10. Maintains collaborative, team relationships with peers and colleagues in order to effectively contribute to the working groups achievement of goals, and to help foster a positive work environment 

11. Completes all training requirements and courses established and/or provided by the department. 

 

Physical Requirements:  

1. Frequent standing and walking with the ability to stand and/or walk for eight (8) hours. 

2. Regularly climbs flights of stairs and ladders. 

3. Occasionally does heavy lifting. 

4. Must be able to wear appropriate personal protective equipment such as masks, gloves or eye protection as required. 

5. Some exposure to the elements during regular rounds. 

6. Visual acuity to read gauges and inspect machines. 

7. Physically able to perform the duties and responsibilities outlined above. 

 

Skills & Abilities: 

1. Proficient in communicating, reading, and writing in English. 

2. Basic Computer Skills. 

3. Ability to multi-task and meet established deadlines. 

4. Ability to resolve routine to complex problems daily, communicate well, and understand directions. 

5.  Ability to make independent decisions, good judgment and/or assessment. 

6. Ability to handle stress due to constant pressure and attention to detail.
