Position summary:
Our Workplace Services department is seeking a Facilities Engineering Associate to join our growing team in our Worcester, MA office. 

The Facilities Engineering Associate should have a strong desire to gain valuable experience as they will gain hands on experience assisting skilled maintenance personnel in the service, repair, installation, operation and modification, of equipment throughout our facilities.

The Facilities Engineering Associate will work closely with more experienced employees to learn how to perform a wide variety of maintenance, custodial and other facilities related services and ultimately perform various equipment service tasks designed to drive customer satisfaction and extend the life of equipment through ensuring equipment is maintained and functioning properly. 

This position is expected to learn and eventually demonstrate technical expertise in a specified trade and become multi-skilled in other areas (e.g. pipe fitting/plumbing, electrical).

The Facilities Engineering Associate consistently perform training and be working towards appropriate licensure for their selected trade.

The Facilities Engineering Associate is classified as essential personnel and, as such, is required to work with minimal amount of absences and during all site closures as required except in the event of a major disaster when access to the facilities is prohibited by governmental emergency personnel. The individual in this role must be available for call-in work and to perform other duties as required.

Position may be required to work extended hours, including on call for 24 x 7 coverage during storms or other emergencies.

This is a Full-time, Non-exempt role.

Responsibilities/Essential Functions:


  • Work with more experienced engineers to learn how to perform in-depth and detailed maintenance work such as installing, operating, and maintaining all equipment and components that support the facility. These include HVAC systems, building management systems, chillers, boilers, emergency generators and compressed air systems, etc.
  • Under direct supervision, learn how to perform preventive maintenance on all base building and critical system equipment such as: assembling all tools, supplies and instruments necessary to complete the job, performing work with a minimum amount disruption, conducting immediate cleanup of work area, completing the preventive task sheet, returning tools to workshop, and unused supplies to store room, reporting any equipment problems, impending supply or material shortages to the Principal Engineer.
  • Learn and ensure proper care of tools and equipment and ensure calibration. Enhance and maintain technical knowledge of current standards, codes and procedures regarding safe and effective use of medical equipment.
  • Mentor with and assist more experienced technicians on progressive repairs and resolution, and will work as a member of the local team to provide efficient service delivery to all accounts within his/her assigned area
  • Become proficient in the operation of all types of hand and power tools and equipment.
  • Ensure all work orders are completed on and closed with all appropriate documentation within the time constraints of the request.
  • Performs routine daily checks of equipment.
  • Read and interpret equipment manuals and work orders to perform required maintenance and service.
  • Assist facilities department staff with other duties such as: facility projects, inspections, snow removal, minor renovations, etc.
  • Comply with all safety practices and procedures
  • Responds to emergency situations (fire, weather etc.)

Customer service

  • Completes and responds to maintenance work orders in a timely manner
  • Utilize Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to plan and complete customer requests and assigned PM work orders.
  • Respond timely and professionally to customer requests.
  • Completes work orders within Service Level Agreements (SLA) completion time and receive customer satisfaction score at or above departmental standards.

  • Ability to repeatedly bend, twist, stoop, kneel, crawl, squat ETC. for extended periods of time (25%-75% of time).
  • Ability to climb to heights (e.g. ladder) and maintain balance for extended periods while performing work tasks.
  • Ability to operate hand and power tools.
  • Ability to report to work in adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to perform work tasks in adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to perform work tasks in a loud/noisy work environment.
  • May be exposed to a variety of chemicals within a controlled environment
