SUMMARY

Perform a wide variety of duties involved with the operation of the boiler room including firing, regulating and monitoring high pressure steam boilers and system, air compressors and auxiliary equipment, purchasing supplies and maintaining inventory of supplies and equipment following standard practices and procedures.
Position requires a State Stationary Engineers License (minimum of a 3rd class engineer license) and ability to work from charts, tables, manuals, schedules, gauges, written or verbal orders or instructions. Use various hand and power tools as required.
Responsible for proper and safe firing, regulating and other duties incidental to operate high pressure boilers; build up and regulate pressure for transmission to various parts of the plant and equipment depending on schedules and demand. Monitor a variety of control devices such as high temperature and pressure gauges, limit switches, valves, etc.; test water levels; start, stop and regulate pumps, blowers and auxiliary equipment. Read and interpret an array of pressure and water gauges, fuel meters and other control devices. Operate valves, control buttons, levers, etc., to operate and control draft fans, water and fuel and to maintain required temperature and pressure.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

1. Test boiler water daily for solids, alkalines, etc., using standardized test procedures. As required add agents to correct condition. Clean boilers as scheduled or as needed. Drain, wash, blow out and clean boiler. Scrape and clean out slag, soot, etc. Lubricate pumps, compressors, motors, and other equipment to maintain efficient operation. Repair and/or replace broken valves, gauges, levers, other parts as required. Assist, as needed in tube and core changes, electrical control repairs, etc.
2. Maintain inventory of boiler rooms supplies and equipment such as boiler water additives, lubricants, spare parts, etc. Originate purchase orders for requirements, receive and store materials.
3. Assist in repair and maintenance duties in and out of boiler room. Pull motors, shafts, and pack and replace valves, solenoids, etc.; install steam and air lines, cut, thread and anchor pipe; install fittings and anchor in approved manner.
4. Maintain required records, reading and logs and maintain certification of State License. Cooperate with various States, insurance or other inspections.
5. Detect and report unsafe or defective equipment as well as unusual situations to the Supervisor. Observe, obey, and assure compliance with all safety rules, regulations and practices. Employ all safety equipment and devices. Maintain boiler room in a clean and orderly manner.
6. Regular and reliable attendance is a requirement of the job.
Perform other similar or related duties as assigned or directed.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Associate degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical school
3-5 years of experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. Use of charts and tables.
