Lead Plumber

The Lead Plumber maintains the plumbing and gas infrastructure across College facilities, including completion of deferred maintenance and capital improvement projects.

Responsibilities of the Lead Plumber include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Oversee all plumbing operations on campus; evaluate, research, and make recommendations for improvements and enhancements; install, maintain and diagnose all related equipment.
• Respond to emergency calls, weather related emergencies, and other situations as required to minimize service interruptions, damage to facilities or injury to members of our community.
• Install, repair and maintain all plumbing and sanitary systems in buildings in accordance with the rules promulgated by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts State Board of Examiners of Plumbers and Gas Fitters.
• Oversee water distribution within campus including back flow preventers, building water, sanitary and acid wastes, pH neutralization adjustment systems, drains, vents, fixtures, dishwashers, garbage disposals, hot water tanks, hot water generators, valves, traps, and reducing valves.
• Install sprinkler piping and heads, reset and/or service automatic sprinkler valves and conduct hydrostatic tests of systems; schedule and oversee all inspections of sprinkler systems.
• Install, repair and maintain underground water mains, sanitary sewers, drains and sump pumps, drain lines, valves, grease traps and expansion joints, sewage ejectors, manholes and pits.
• Assist in sewage discharge system repairs, including connections to regional transfer station lines and infrastructure.
• Apply for and obtain permits from local jurisdictions, layout work and follow work plans, order materials and supplies, and schedule system tests and work inspections.
• Provide services to enhance energy conservation and reduce utility expense.
• Maintain electronic and paper records, utilize campus budget and work order systems, and complete administrative forms and reports as needed.
• Maintain and secure all inventories, monitoring department budgets and expenditures.
• Oversee the selection and bid process for outside contractors and vendors; supervise outside vendors and contractors to ensure contract compliance.
• Train and supervise staff and coordinate schedules. Ensure that employees are properly trained in the use of all equipment used by the department.


• High school diploma or trade school certificate, and at least 3 years of experience on heavy construction or in commercial, institutional or industrial work as an apprentice or journeyman plumber required, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Current Commonwealth of Massachusetts Master Plumbers License.
• Valid driver’s license and a safe driving record.
• Ability to work overtime in emergency situations or when special events or projects are scheduled.
• Thorough understanding of plumbing, gas fitting and sewage systems and equipment.
• Previous supervisory experience.
• Ability to exercise sound judgment when using equipment and chemicals, and follow approved safety standards and precautions.
• Ability to organize and prioritize workload with minimal supervision to meet required deadlines.
• High degree of confidentiality and discretion.
• Knowledge of safety and OSHA requirements.
• Ability to communicate well, with strong written and interpersonal skills.
• Physically capable of lifting 50 – 80 pounds.
• Ability to work independently and function as part of a team to resolve problems.
• Ability to work from ladders and staging.
• Familiarity with basic computer data/processing programs.
