Chief Engineer Job Description
Seaport Hotel & World Trade Center
Scope of Position
The Chief Engineer is responsible for the effective management of all engineering and maintenance operations within the hotel, including energy conservation. The Chief Engineer is also responsible for the development of the Engineering Team and staying abreast of compliance regulations and procedures in the field of Engineering, as required for hotel standards. This position also provides oversight and cooperation for all external contractors on-sight including acceptance of work.
This position will typically cover normal business hours. The position will require off shift work and is always responsible for the smooth mechanical operation of the property.
Lead the Engineering Team in the day-to-day engineering and maintenance operations of the hotel, including service standards, equipment schedules, and work schedules
Communicate with Housekeeping to coordinate and prioritize maintenance activities for Guest rooms and public areas
Develop systems and procedures to ensure the health and safety of Guests and Team Members, as well as the proper conditions for plants, machinery, and property
Ensure full compliance with local regulations
Prepare a 5-year Capital Plan that is updated annually (Department Head input is required)
Prepare annual department budget
Perform daily inspections around the hotel
Diagnose, maintain, and repair mechanical equipment within the hotel
Ensure good relationships are built with internal and external customers
Maintenance of all hotel fixtures and fittings to ensure they are in safe condition and take action when any unsafe situations arise
Develop, implement, and direct all emergency programs
Develop, implement and manage energy conservation and other “Green” programs for the property to minimize expenses and reinforce our industry leading sustainability profile
Coordinate renovation bidding, define the cost and scope of the project, and oversee the general contractor and subcontractors to ensure quality work is performed cost effectively
Perform special projects and other responsibilities as assigned
Identify and introduce environmentally-friendly systems and equipment
Monitor Key Performance Indicators for the Engineering Department and take corrective action, as required, to improve equipment inventory, product quality, productivity, and other objectives
Manage all Team Member related activities, including recruitment, performance management, training, career planning, disciplinary matters, and team motivation
Supervise day-to-day building operations.
Supervise all staff (approximately twelve people)
Delegate work assignments to all disciplines.
Oversee R&M and Capital Projects under the Chief Engineer.
Maintain equipment inventory and purchasing systems.
Develop short and long-term building operations planning.
Oversee Preventative Maintenance program.
Responsible for practicing, managing and promoting our Mission and Values so that it becomes an intricate part of the everyday operation.
Completes any duties or projects assigned by the Senior Management.
Required Job Knowledge and Skills
Skilled and Knowledgeable in building trades.
Solid knowledge and skill in the safe use of hand and power tools and other materials required to perform repair and maintenance tasks.
Safely perform highly complex repairs of the physical property, electrical, plumbing and mechanical equipment, air conditioners, refrigeration and pool heaters - ensuring all methods, materials and practices meet company standards and Local and National codes - with little or no supervision.
Display advanced knowledge of all engineering computer programs related to preventative maintenance, energy management, and other systems, including devices that interact with such programs.
Experienced with programming and operation auto motion systems, fire alarms and other building electronic systems.
Knowledgeable in reading and understanding plans and specifications.
Must be familiar with all Massachusetts plumbing, electrical and HVAC codes.
Proficient, at an advanced level, with computers and relevant computer programs
Committed to delivering a high level of customer service
Strong leadership skills and previous experience of managing a team
Excellent grooming standards
Flexibility to respond to a range of different work situations
Ability to work under pressure
Ability to work on their own
Good communication skills
5 years’ minimum experience in building trades or Hotel Engineering
Two years as Chief for Assistant Chief Engineer
Proficient in Microsoft Office products (including Microsoft Project Manager)
Licensed in at least one skilled trade

College degree or equivalent work experience
Engineering Degree preferred
Fluency of the English language is required (read, write, speak)
Must be able to listen to, read and/or write instructions, memos, short correspondences and messages.
