Work for Apprentice Facilities Maintenance Technicians (MEP Generalists) involves the skills of two or more maintenance or craft occupations to keep machines, mechanical equipment, or the structure of an establishment in repair. Duties may involve insulating; Structural welding; machining; carpentry; repairing electrical or mechanical equipment; installing, aligning, and balancing new equipment; and repairing buildings, floors, or stairs.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:

Inspect, operate, or test machinery or equipment to diagnose machine malfunctions.

Assist in the Dismantle machines, equipment, or devices to access and remove defective parts, using hoists, cranes, hand tools, or power tools.

Perform routine maintenance, such as inspecting drives, motors, or belts, checking fluid levels, replacing filters, or doing other preventive maintenance actions.

Assist in the Repair machines, equipment, or structures, using tools such as hammers, hoists, saws, drills, wrenches, or equipment such as precision measuring instruments or electrical or electronic testing devices.

Servicing, repairing, adjusting, and testing machines, devices, moving parts, and equipment that operate primarily on the basis of mechanical (not electronic) principles.

Perform minor building, HVAC, plumbing, electrical and painting repairs as necessary.

Implement preventative maintenance measures.

Respond quickly in the event of an emergency, notify appropriate personnel and follow safety protocol.

Non-Essential Functions/Duties:

Relocating office furniture, installing specialty items and equipment.
Observing, receiving, and otherwise obtaining information from all relevant sources.
Maintain inventory of repair equipment and supplies
Complete inspections of offices and laboratories with Maintenance Manager


To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each job duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required.

Mechanical — Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.

Public Safety and Security — Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective local, state, or national security operations for the protection of people, data, property, and institutions.

Troubleshooting: Able to determine causes of operating errors and decide on most effective and efficient course of action to repair.

Mechanical Ability: Must be able to read and understand all electrical and mechanical schematic and diagrams. Must have knowledge of single and three phase electric, AC, DC high and low voltages.

Repairing: Ability to work on equipment or systems using various types of hand tools, measuring and testing instruments, etc.

Equipment Maintenance: Able to perform routine preventative maintenance on equipment and determine proper type of corrective maintenance needed.

Tool Use and Organization: Maintain tools and maintenance equipment in working order and maintenance room and work areas in neat condition.

JOB REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:                                              


High school diploma or GED
0-3 years of related experience or an aptitude for mechanical maintenance
Must be a safe reliable worker
Must be able to perform simple tasks independently after being given specific instructions
Must be able to read and comprehend instructions
Capable of handling multiple tasks at once
Works well with others and is a team player.


Previous work-related skill, knowledge, or experience preferred.
