Objective:  This course was prepared to meet the demand for advanced instruction in all phases of steam engineering. Great strides have been made in powerhouse methods in the last few years, resulting in a demand for better educated Superintendents, Chief Engineers and Master Mechanics.

Description: The principles of combustion and economic firing, calculations relating to safety valves and strength of steam boilers, the latest types of steam turbines with their practical application.

Outline:

  • The Second Class Engineer - Must thoroughly understand the latest types of steam turbines, their auxiliaries, maintenance and operation. After holding a Third Class Engineer’s License for one year, you are eligible to take the Second Class Engineers course to prepare you for the state license exam. After passing the exam you are licensed to “have charge of and operate a boiler or boilers, and to have charge of and operate engines, no one of which shall exceed 150 horsepower, or to operate a first class plant under the engineer in direct charge thereof”.

  • A First Class Engineer – After holding a Second Class Engineer’s License for one and one half years, you are eligible to take the First Class Engineer’s course to prepare you for the state license exam. After passing the exam you are then licensed to “have charge of and operate any steam plant” in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

  • Second Class Engineers Course Outline:
    • License law, state and government regulations
    • Basic math to algebra
    • Physical units and their measurements
    • Thermodynamic principles and processes
    • Properties of air, water, steam and mollier chart
    • Fuels
    • Combustion, flue gas analysis boiler losses
    • Methods of burning fuel
    • Draft, fans, stacks
    • ASME code
    • Heat saving equipment: feedwater heaters, economizers, air preheaters
    • Feedwater: conditioning, treatment and testing
    • Steam Turbines: construction, principles of operation, starting, stopping, operational problems, instrumentation, various designs, bearings, hydrogen cooling of generators and related instruction
    • Boiler ratings and capacities
    • Math for engineers

Prerequisites: To be eligible for the examination for the Second Class Engineer’s license, a person must be a citizen or furnish proof of having filed a declaration of his or her intention to become a citizen of the United States.

Must furnish evidence as to his or her previous training and experience and must have been employed for not less than three years as an engineer in charge of a steam plant or plants having at least one engine or turbine over one hundred and fifty horse power.

Or, must have held and used a Second Class Engineer’s license in a Second Class plant for not less than one and a half years or held and used an equivalent license in the United States merchant marine for three years or have held and used an equivalent license from another state for three years
